Walk Like an IceHawk

Let's show you how to do the (video)

  • Walk like a IceHawk– Spread and angle your feet outward to broaden your base. This makes it harder to fall. Bend your knees to lower your center of gravity. Put your arms out to your sides for balance.
  • Do the slow shuffle – If you don’t like to waddle like a IceHawk, keep your feet about a foot apart, and take small, shuffling steps, aligning your feet after each step. Keep your pace slow. Take stair steps one at a time and use the handrail.
  • Fall the right way – If you are about to go down, lean forward so the back of your head and spine don’t hit the pavement. Try and fall on your thigh, hip and shoulder, not on your easily broken arms, knees, wrists or spine. Try and relax your muscles as you fall, you’ll be less likely to get hurt.

Winter Safety Tips...Slow and Steady

We would like to remind everyone to be safe while on campus during the winter months. No matter how well the snow and ice are removed from sidewalks and parking lots, people may encounter some slippery surfaces.

  • Take your time
  • Select appropriate footwear – flat footwear with rubber soles provides best traction
  • Keep both hands out of pockets for balance
  • Avoid taking shortcuts. Use Main Entrances only to enter/exit buildings, not side entrances.
  • Hold onto your vehicle when going in/out for support
  • Be sure to use floor mats when entering a building to remove moisture from your shoes

More Information

Stay Safe IceHawks!

Safe Winter Walking. Remove traction cleats when entering building. Wipe your shoes on mats. Watch for melted snow and ice. Watch for slippery surfaces.

If you See Something, Say Something

As the fall semester end approaches and winter settles in, this is a quick reminder to stay safe around campus and in your classes. If something doesn’t seem right or you have a safety question, speak up and let someone know. You can also reach out to the Safety Committee and contact Occupational Safety and Environmental Coordinator Tammy Wilman

Remember: if you see something, say something!
