Getting Intentional To Manage Stress
There are many things that may be very stressful for many of us right now. When we feel scared, anxious, or distressed our bodies go into the fight, flight, or freeze response. So, what are some things we can do to help ourselves better manage these feelings?
We have at least 3 choices:
1. Avoid news altogether
2. Obsess over the news
Both choices are reactive responses that suggest your emotions might be in control of you. Instead, consider….
3. Get intentional and take control back.
a. Be mindful and intentional of how much news you consume and from what sources.
b. Be aware of your own cognitive distortions:
i. Catastrophizing: “This is all terrible and everything is a disaster”.
ii. Mental filtering: “There is nothing good happening in the world”.
iii. Othering: “Every ___(fill in the group) is ____ (dangerous, uninformed, etc)”.
c. Do a locus of control exercise:

If you’re feeling stressed and would like to talk with someone, please remember that 91ɬÂþ offers free in person sessions as well as virtual sessions through our digital provider, Mantra Health or please email Amy Fullerton, LPCC.
